Letisha McFall Studio

Letisha in her studioI have sewn since childhood. Like many nice girls of the 1950's I was taught to make all my own clothes, an a vintage treadle machine. I sewed my way through high school and started my first - and still unfinished quilt in my 20's.

Career, family and feminism interrupted my passion and love of creating beautiful things from fibre. In the last few years my fascination regarding womens' fibre work has expanded and re-emerged. Over 30 courses in both quilting and felting as well as hundreds of hours of studio time and teaching have allowed me to learn more and create well over 100 individual and unique pieces for people as far away as Switzerland and Scotland.

Each of my quilted projects is unique, and made especially for you, to commemorate people, places, events, celebrations.

Imagine a wall hanging made from baby clothes, or a signature quilt signed by your wedding,  birthday or reunion guests. Imagine your family photo album transformed into a bed quilt or a quilted pillow featuring your holiday snaps. Imagine a tablecloth re-cycled from your favourite hockey uniform, or a shawl featuring your collection of opera tickets.

In my work I create new from old, reinventing as I go. While I study and collect historic quilts I don't copy them. I use them as inspiration by combining traditional quilt forms with contemporary ideas in fabrics, colours, style influences and personal elements. For example by combining current and vintage fabrics, transferring precious photo images and mementos, adding embroidery and other features, I capture family and persona stories, both past and present. And, like the quilters of old, I make something unique- that has the potential of becoming a family heirloom.

"Presenting the quilt to my clients (I am an architect) was the perfect touch! They were so excited to see their names including the cat's name and street address embroidered on the quilt. "We opened the quilt and each one of us were teary eyed. Such a personal and useful gift. The images on the quilt identified each member of the family and now the staff in the nursing home know that Mom has a family who love her. They call each of us by name now when we come to visit."
